For the better part of a decade I have made my living by paying very close attention to other companies — the way they move, the words they choose, the customers they win and the ones they lose. I have built competitive intelligence functions from scratch at three global software companies, in industries as different as enterprise relationship management, financial performance management, and human capital management. The work is fundamentally one of closely analyzing sales calls, product release notes, analyst reports, and customer feedback, and always listening to what is said and, sometimes, to what is left out.
On a regular workday, I draft executive briefings, build competitor battlecards, and present quarterly competitive and market reports to sales reps, product managers, and executive teams. I also run win/loss programs where I dive deep into insights from existing/prospective customers and translate them into actionable business outcomes. The tools, companies and industries might change, but the discipline does not.
Off the desk, you can find me teaching yoga in one of the many beautiful parks across Toronto. I first came to the mat the same way most of us do: looking for a way to slow down an always busy mind. However, what has kept me going is the opportunity to deepen my attention on what truly matters.
Interestingly, both my professional and personal vocations are so perfectly aligned! Each one asks you to keep showing up and doing the hard work before it reveals worthwhile results. Both of them reward steady noticing and punish hurried effort.
This site is a small, private space on the internet where I intend to share some of the things that pique my interest. Over time, you can expect to see professional writings about competitive strategy, but also occasional blog posts, photographs from my travels, and updates on my class schedule for the upcoming week. Please stay as long as you like and read in whatever order feels right. I sincerely hope you will keep coming back for more.
